about my work
The world of non-human primates has been a primary focus of my work as a painter and sculptor. I have concentrated on themes that concern their survival in light of competing interests with humans for food and natural habitat.
Through my up close portraits, it is important for me to try to convey the fascination and spirit of the individual. That is an on going challenge. If I can share what is unique about each primate, as is the case with each human, then there is always the opportunity for a connection to be made with the viewer and that is the ultimate goal.
More recently, I have broadened my focus and include series that respond to the issue of migration . In the Shadows is one such series.
As a full time painter and sculptor, I work with a host of materials. Painting primarily in oils and acrylic, and using clay for my sculptures. When possible I am looking to find connections between materials and subject matter.
I lean heavily on real life experiences, having had the opportunity to study many of my subjects in both zoos and in their natural habitat. Visiting wild places around the world, including India, Kenya, Tanzania, Costa Rica and Thailand have deepened my knowledge and understanding of the ongoing challenges that face them and their environments. Together with my personal photo collection, I have a rich and ongoing source of inspiration.
By donating a portion of each sale to conservation and by raising awareness of wildlife issues, my aim is to contribute to their ongoing need for support and protection.
